The history of St. Aloysius School goes back over 150 years. In 1873, the Archdiocese of Louisville purchased a former Methodist church for the young parish. This became the first St. Aloysius School. It was located in Rollington and that building served as the school for over 20 years.
But, as the population of the area began to shift southward, the parish did, too. And, in 1926, the second St. Aloysius School opened. The school was run by the Sisters of Mercy in a Victorian-style house that the Sisters named “Mount Mercy.” The student population was rapidly expanding and soon outgrew Mount Mercy. The school was moved to a larger house nearby in 1944, but it was obvious that a permanent, earnest school building was needed.
In 1955, St. Aloysius School opened in our present building. As the population has grown, so has St. Aloysius School. Over the past 70 years, St. Aloysius School has expanded the building, including adding our gymnasium in 1982.
St. Aloysius continues to grow and meet the needs of Oldham, Jefferson, Shelby, and surrounding counties. St. Aloysius School is recognized as one of the premier schools in the Louisville area. In 2014 and again in 2020, St. Aloysius School was awarded the prestigious Blue Ribbon School award by the U.S. Department of Education. This award is given to the top 50 private schools in the nation each year based on test scores, curriculum, and overall community involvement.
As of the 2024-2025 school year, the K-8 enrollment was 445, with an average class size of 22.
